Karolina Jakaitė (b. 1978) PhD, design historian and a postdoctoral researcher at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, co-founder of Design Foundation. In 2012 she defended her doctoral thesis on Lithuanian Graphic Design in 1950s-1970s: between National and International.

Her professional interests include topics from design studies in the 20th century, design and identity, national exhibitions, Soviet design and architecture, contemporary design and policy. She has written articles, edited books and catalogues on Lithuanian design, curated seminars and exhibitions.

Looking at the examples of contemporary Lithuanian design the lecture will try to answer this intriguing question "LITHUANIA: LAND OF DESIGN?" or bold statement (!), full of paradoxes. Today, 30 years after Lithuania regained its independence from the Soviet regime, Lithuanian design enjoys a marked growth, justified by quite diverse design projects, events and important awards. Lithuanian design is also acknowledged internationally. Lithuania does have true success stories, but still, there are some uncommon situations and new challenges which the lecture would like to stress and discuss outside the Lithuanian discourse.
